Monotherapy Results
- Clinically proven to reduce total and LDL cholesterol levels.
Adjunctive Therapy Results
- In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving patients on a statin who had not reached their LDL cholesterol goal…adding BENECOL® Spread, containing 5.1 grams of plant stanol esters*, with meals lowered LDL cholesterol by an additional 17% vs. only 7% in the placebo group, after 8 weeks
of treatment (p < 0.0001).
*Equivalent to 6 servings of currently formulated BENECOL® Spreads.
10% difference in LDL reduction (mg/dL) between groups (p<0.0001) †
- The 10% difference in additional LDL cholesterol reduction between the BENECOL® Spread and placebo groups may facilitate added cholesterol lowering without requiring an increase of the statin dose. 9, 10, 11
- The LDL cholesterol lowering effect of BENECOL® Spread was already evident by the end of week 2.
- BENECOL® Spread reduced total cholesterol at 8 weeks by 12% compared with a placebo reduction of 5% (p < 0.0001).
- Both the BENECOL® Spread and placebo spread were well tolerated, and no significant adverse events were noted.

† This study compared the cholesterol-lowering effect of plant stanol ester spread (BENECOL® Spread) with a placebo spread in patients taking statin therapy, but who still had elevated LDL cholesterol ≤ 130 mg/dL. The 142 adults who completed the trial had been taking a stable dose of a statin drug for at least 3 months prior to enrollment. The subjects were taking one of the following: atorvastatin, lovastatin, pravastatin, or simvastatin. They continued to take the statin, and were randomized to either BENECOL® Spread or placebo (canola-oil spread). The BENECOL® Spread provided 5.1 g/day of plant stanol esters.
