Derived from natural plant sources, plant stanol esters inhibit cholesterol absorption by preventing cholesterol from entering micelles. As a result, cholesterol is eliminated from the body, hepatic cholesterol concentrations are reduced, and expression of hepatic LDL receptors is increased.
The receptors bind circulating LDL particles, which are subsequently metabolized, so that the cholesterol-lowering effect of BENECOLŪ Spreads is almost exclusively related to LDL cholesterol. HDL cholesterol and triglycerides are unaffected by plant stanol esters.
